Plot Summary:

Everyone has their demons. Most people can lock them up inside. They can keep them at bay, hiding them from friends, family, and lovers.

I don’t have that luxury. My demon’s clawed its way to the surface. It sits there, day after day, mocking me.

A raised scar on my left arm. A constant reminder of all my faults. A mark that will never fade.

Behind every scar, there’s a story. My name is Libby Grayson, and this story’s mine.

This town is poison. It seeps into your marrow, corrupting you from the inside out.

For most people, there’s no escape. But I’m not like most people.

I left Milton, Texas years ago, but now I’m back. With my stepsister in trouble, I had no choice.

When I find her in Buck Wild, serving beers in a skimpy cowgirl outfit, I realize she’s not the only one in trouble.

I can’t take my eyes off her. I can’t stop undressing her in my head. I can’t… say no.

And I won’t stop until she’s mine.

Bleeding and on all fours in a strip club parking lot, this isn't my ideal Thursday night.

But here I am, and there he is. Luke Masters. My stepbrother. He just saved me from one of my abusive, drunk customers.

He’s as irritating as ever, thinking I’ll follow him around like a wounded animal because he helped me.

I’m not a princess, and I don’t need to be rescued.

But the smirk on his annoyingly handsome face tells me he has something else planned for me.

And by the way my body’s reacting to his rippling muscles and commanding presence, I’m ready to see what that might be.

Until I find out that my stepmother’s dead… and all eyes are on Luke.

My thoughts:

If this past month has proven anything to me, it's don't judge a book by its cover! Behind These Scars had so much tension and depth - I was truly blown away! It dealt with a bit of a taboo love situation (the male lead Luke and female lead Libby were formerly step-siblings), depression, self-harm, emotional abuse, and more. I loved the way important background information was revealed gradually, as we got to know the characters, but there was just enough info provided along the way to hazard a guess at the real drama. There was even a gnarly plot twist that I never saw coming.

In the beginning, you just think that Luke is a manipulative jerk, but you also get the sense that there is so much more underneath. His backstory is so heartbreaking, not just for him, but the ramifications on Libby as well. She goes through so so much from the beginning to the end of the book and you just can't help but long for her to get her HEA. This was such a wonderful slow burn with so much angst and tension and feeling - I give it 4.5 out 5 wine glasses!
